Climbing the Mountain Again: What Serena’s Return means for the APTL
Forgive me for being boring and predictable, but I just have to write about Serena’s return. She looked better today than she did when she was on the verge of retirement back in 2022. It’s inspiring and encouraging to see an all-time great get back out there at 44 and go toe-to-toe with top-tier talent: Australia’s Maya Joint, World No. 87, who won her very first main draw match at Wimbledon — against the GOAT. Yes, I said it . . . the GOAT.
Serena showed flashes of the brilliance of her prime: timely aces, backhand return winners, and of course, the “Come on!” fist pump at break points that kept bringing the Centre Court crowd to their feet in applause. Where does she go from here? It’s up to her. Can she win another Grand Slam? As she showed today, her physical capability remains undeniable. It’s entirely up to her.
What does this mean for the APTL? It means three and a half years away from the game doesn’t mean that making a run again is impossible. Honestly, the Serena Jameka Williams I watched today was more match-ready, focused, and aggressive than the player I watched cut her Wimbledon run short due to a heartbreaking slip-and-fall in her 2021 first-round match on Centre Court.
It’s not time that tells the story — it’s where someone is in their life and how much time they’ve had to breathe, assess, rest, build, then gradually — like the energy of last night’s Strawberry Full Moon in Capricorn — step by step and level by level, just like the mountain goat — begin climbing the mountain all over again.
And this is where the APTL can, and will, have a life-changing effect on the players who make our rosters. Rather than trying to get match-ready without a surrounding infrastructure — traveling alone and playing win-or-go-home tournaments with prize money that’s far from enough to live on — the APTL provides:
Built-in Support: Day-in and day-out training partners by way of teammates and coaches.
Financial Security: A guaranteed $60k salary and benefits throughout the summer season.
Elite Standards: Full-length, best-of-three sets matches every weekend to stay sharp and ready.
We’ll keep in touch, tracking the Americans at Wimbledon, and updating you as the APTL continues to build and grow.
